What´s New?!

After months of hard work and planning, Edupaz is very excited to share that the Year long Nonviolence Training Course Offered through a partnership with the Baptist Seminary of Cali, "Culture of Peace with an Emphasis in Conflict Transformation" will be starting on July 18, 2008.

The course will be covering topics such as Human Diginity/Rights, Active Nonviolence, Interpersonal Communication, Healing of Trauma and Stress, Restorative Justice, Conflict Transformation, Mediation, Conscientious Objection and Political advocacy.

Facilitators will include a range of professionals from various parts of Colombia and the world (US, Canada and Chile) who have Masters work in Theology, Psychology, Political Science, Conflict Transformation, History and Mediation. The course is directed towards community and church leaders working in social areas that are interested in deepening their knowledge in the area of active nonviolence with the goal of bringing the acquired knowledge back to their communities upon completion. Inscriptions will be open until July 1, 2008.

Arrival of New MCCers to Edupaz! Barbara and Steven Derthick along with their children Ian, Anna and Joel will be joining the team of Edupaz at the end of July. Steven was Director of a Mediation Center at one of their churches for several years and both Barbara and Steven have extensive experience working with hispanic communities both in the US as translators and also during their term with Peace Corps in Guatemala in the nineties working in public health. We look forward to welcoming to the team!

Current Edupaz Volunteer, Social Work Student and Former peer Mediator at America´s Unidas School

"While being part of the Peer Mediation program during my high school years at America´s Unidas School, I was able to become more familiar with the political, economic and social reality of my country.

I remember when I was in 11th grade, thanks to being part of the team of peer mediators, I had the opportunity to visit a farm located in Yocoto called “Japón” with teachers Girlesa Ospina and Jackeline Acebedo and Pastor Milton Zuluaga, who gave a talk about peaceful coexistence to families of that had been displaced and were living at the farm, although my participation was minimal and helped out by leading a trust game, I was able to hear the testimony of several people, who were forced to leave their land and how their lives had changed since being displaced.

This visit was crucial for me, being it was during a stage in my life when I was deciding what to major in in college, at that point I had thought of majors such as chemical engineering, but that day I decided to study Social Work. I had seen a reality that for me had been unknown.

I recognized the need to support construction of peace in Colombia. Peace education and peer mediators also influenced this decision. Today I am finishing my degree in Social Work and I recognize how important it was so that today my heart aches to work toward peace, having been a part of programs like those during my adolescence."

"What I´ve liked most about being a peer mediator is that I can intervene in fights and teach them that in order to resolve conflicts the best way to do so it through dialogue, because violence and aggresiveness do not solve problems.

I have enjoyed it a lot because I can teach them and share peace.I say that if we all were mediators, there would be peace in the world.So I invite all children to become peer mediators and that adults may share peace so that the world may be a better place.This is the message that I want to give to those who read this note about my experience as a peer mediator. Have a great day!"

What are Peer Mediators?

It is a program that started in America´s Unidas School (Mennonite Brethren) in 1999 in which student leaders from different grades, teachers and administrators are trained in Conflict Transformation. They facilitate the process of transforming conflicts into opportunities to improve interpersonal relationships and peaceful coexistence in their schools.

What´s New?

Peer Mediators is a program that we have been applying in Americas Unidas School that has a student body of about 680 in two schedules (morning and afternoon classes). Over the past 3 months, a group of fifty students have been trained in topics such as self-esteem, Human Rights, Active non-violence, economic justice (pan y paz/ bread and peace), mediation and conflict resolution; with these students we have been carrying out a monthly process of follow-up and evaluation .

Sanctuaries of Peace returns to the churches of Cali. In December Hernando Padilla of Justapaz led indroductory workshops with members of local churches on sanctuaries of peace as a proposal for God´s people. The next dates are March 28 and 29 , July 25 and 26 and October 24 and 25.

Colombia is chosen to host the pilot program of the MCC Young Adult Initiative, which will have a duration of 2 years and will be made up of Foreigners and Nationals who will be placed in projects that will have a focus on social service in local churches that are located in lower economic sectors.

Political Advocacy
"We, the Mennonite Brethren, based on the teachings of Jesus, dedicate ourselves to disciple each person in our community to live in a way that reflects the character of Jesus Christ. A fundamental part of this discipleship is the formation in justice, active non-violence, education for peace and conflict resolution, conscientious objection, absolute rejection of war and separation of the church and state as biblical and anabaptist values. In addition, we work in the holistic stregthening of the family as a fundamental organ of society, out of the principles of love, honesty, discipline and mutual submission. In that way we are fundamentally advocating for policies that would bring about the development of a nation where justice, active non-violence and peace may reign."

Testimony of the Month:
Christine Dussault, North American teacher living in Cali

"The discussion group that was formed in September of this year at Edupaz has been exceptionally valuable for me. I have been living in Colombia for a year and a half, as an American teacher at an upper strata bilingual school.

Previous to joining the group, I had a very incomplete understanding of the conflicts of this nation. It was difficult for me to recognize the complete culture of Colombia, and the challenges Colombians face day to day.

However, with the leadership and bi-cultural awareness of Erin Sigler, several of my colleagues and I have been able to learn and discuss many important issues. We often have personal testimonies from guest speakers with different backgrounds. We can ask questions, and learn in a non-threatening environment.

I hope to use the information I've learned to promote an understanding of what Colombia has endured, and continue show people what an incredible nation it truly is."

I: What´s new?

August:
- We led two workshops with the teachers in Americas Unidas School, one with the theme of the implications of being a “Sanctuary of peace” and the other on Restorative Justice versus Punitive Justice.

- At the beginning of the month we received 4 representatives from Mennonite Central Committee that interviewed us about the impact that MCC has had during the 5 years that they have been working in Colombia.

- Two weeks later Jorge and Erin went to Bogotá to hear the conclusions of the MCC evaluation and were able to meet with Justapaz, Mencoldes, and CLARA to become more familiar with the type of work that they are doing. In addition they participated in a workshop on sustainable development with Terry Jantzi and they also visited the other Mennonite School in la Mesa Cuidinamarca, el Colegio Americano Menno to learn more about their peer mediators program.

- Erin did a devotional with the teachers at Americas Unidas School based on 1 Corinthians 12 talking about the importance of working together as the body of Christ.

- Jorge and Nestor finished their meetings with the round table on public policies with an emphasis on human rights.

- Erin continued with the followup of the Americas Unidas Students that were starting the second phase of the 80 community service hours. In August visited Las Minas and los Polvorines.

- As a team we have begun the process of redefining our strategic plan now that we have gone through several transitions in the office.

- We continued in the process of organizing the teams that dedicate themselves to two of our most popular workshops “Familias de Shalom” ( that touches upon the topic of coexistance in the home and constructive ways of disciplining your children) and Trauma and Stress.

- Jorge and Erin visited two local universities La Javeriana

and Univalle

to check out about possibilities for courses on conflict resolution.

September
- 3rd Erin and Pilar began a discussion group on the Colombian context with north americans that teach at an upper class bilingual school.

- 6,7 Jorge, Mery, Erin and Néstor participated in an International Forum on Restorative Justice at the Javeriana University.

- Néstor, Francisco, Pilar and Jorge successfully met four times with the group that is working on forming a Mediation and restoration program in the office.

- Jorge and Erin met several times with directors at the ACJ/YMCA to talk about possible alliances and also to receive advice during our time of transition.

- 15-23 We celebrated Pan y Paz (Bread and Peace) with activities with children, Americas Unidas School and with adults in 6 local churches and a forum in the Baptist Seminary of Cali in honor of the International Day of Peace (September 21)

- 20-22 Erin visited the Mennonite school (Colegio Americano Menno) in la Mesa Cuidinamarca to confirm the plans for an exchange with Americas Unidas school for the 1-3 of November.

- 24 Erin returned to Bogotá to renew her Colombian Visa and they gave it to her for two years!!

- 27-30 Jorge, Mery and Erin attended the National Counsel of the Colombian Mennonite Brethren focusing on the topics of Divorce and remarriage, women in ministry, politcal awareness and the holy spirit. In addition there were presentations from several Anabaptist institutions. ( Mencoldes, CLARA, Mijuco, Edupaz, CCAU, CDM, MCC, CMM (Mennonite World Conference), Heme aquí, Consorcio Trauma)

October:

- 5- Training of the elementary school peer mediators from Americas Unidas School

- Working on the report and poster for pan y paz

- Meetings with the Directors at Americas Unidas to schedule more activities with the peer mediators for the rest of the year

- With 6th and 7th grade we initiated a change in the way of selecting the peer mediators through interactive games where we can observe some of their natural leadership skills. With this we are hoping to form a group of 20-30 conciliators out of a group of 60-70 students.

- 13, 20 in partnership with the ACJ/ YMCA we had a workshop about planning and presentation of workshops hoping to improve our skills not only in the office but offering tools to the community and local churches as well.

- In this month the discussion group of foreigners from a upper class bilingual school has focused on Plan Colombia and its affects.

- 23, the students that did their 80 community service hours with the ACJ/YMCA are going to turn in their reports of their work and receive their certificates.

- 30- November 1 Jorge and Mery are going to participate in a workshop on advocacy in Bogotá organized by Mennonite Central Committee.

II: News:

For those of you who heard about the Justapaz theft in June, here is a very delayed update in regards to the fact that your letters to congress in fact made a difference. It´s a step, a small one, but worth recognizing.

Justapaz-
From an article in the National Newspaper EL TIEMPO from July 18 2007

In the USA ask for results for the computer theft from an NGO

35 congresspeople sent a letter to Uribe in response to 4 assaults, the investigations of which have not been started started . People affected by the situation solicited that Human Rights Unit of the fiscalia (govt investigations) take responsibility for the cases. It appears that the roberies were politcally motivated. The letter recounts the robberies that occurred this year in the offices of 4 NGO´s: La Asamblea de la Sociedad Civil por la Paz ( The Civil Society Assembly for peace), el movimiento por la Reconciliación ( Reconciliation Movement) a north american entity that accompanies the Community for Peace from San José de Apartadó, Justapaz and the Yira Castro Corporation. In all of the cases, stated the congresspeople, the thieves stole computers that contained “sensitive” information that could put the lives of the activist in danger. They expressed concern because “the investigators failed in collecting physical tests that could have been key information.”

III: Testimonies:

The Teachers from Americas Unidas Schools expressed their opinion about the workshop on “Sanctuaries of Peace” and the implications of being a teacher in a “Sanctuary of peace” in a school like Americas Unidas.

- The teacher Rigoberto Caicedo shared with us “The most important aspect of the workshop was to realize the responsibility that I assume as a peacebuilder in the school, home and in society”

- The teacher Sigifredo Chaguendo shared with us “ I acquired clarity about what is a Sanctuary of peace, what it implies for the school and for me as a teacher at this institution.”

Pan y Paz (Bread and Peace)- Every Wednesday at our church during the month of September we talked about the meaning of shalom, the meaning of companionship and focused on the theme “Why are we anabaptists?” I am a member of the Filadelfia church of the Mennonite Brethren. They gave us the examples of Isaiah 58: 1-12 and John 6: 1-12 and suggested that on September 21 we do an act of active nonviolence with one of our neighbors, “ I have a spot where I sell fruit in the door of my house, it is my way of sustaining myself financially and there is a group of boy from a local gang that always like to bother me and sometimes they stop and smoke marijuana or try to steal my fruit. On Friday September 21st I bought some bread to share with them and waited for them all day and they hadn´t arrived; later on in the afternoon I saw them pass by and I called them, at first they didn´t want to come, they thought I was going to insult them or something, but at the end I got them to come and told them what I was was being celebrated that day and what our pastor had shared with us on Sunday during the service, at first it seemed like they didn´t understand me but when I told them that I wanted to share my bread with them they looked at me strangely but received it and ate it, gave me thanks and went on their way. ”

IV: Prayer Requests:

- For the Millers and their church planting project in Dover, Ohio

- For the Edupaz team during our time of transition and for the strenghthening of our strategic plan.

- For the office so that we may become self- sustainable in the coming months and find other ways of finanancially supporting the work we do.

- For financial resources so that we can continue to train ourselves in the areas of conflict transformation and other areas of peace.

- Pray for the exchange with Colegio Americano Menno with Americas Unidas School at the end of this month.

- For Mery and Jorge´s trip to Bogotá and that it may be a time not only of learning but also a time to make contacts and form relationships

- That God may send new volunteers to the office

- That we may continue with the part of followup to the projects that we have already started.

Entry for the month of July

Our apologies for the delay in posting this month....we are still in the process of getting in the swing of things as we are processing several transitions in the office. We appreciate your patience :)

I: What´s new?

- We had our second office retreat of the year at the Cumbre focusing on integration, evaluation of the first semester and defining our work plan for the second part of the year taking into account the transitions and internal changes that have occurred in the past month with the new director (Jorge Morales) and the departure of the Millers.

- In Partnership with the YMCA we finished the training portion of the 80 community service hours. Here in Colombia students are required to complete 80 community service hours in order to graduate and Edupaz has teamed up with the local YMCA to offer the opportunity to fulfil this requirement in a way that could truly make a difference in their community and their personal development.

- Chet finished his second workshop on Conflict Transformation and Analysis, and successfully trained 8 people from the community and various churches.

- Holly and Mery were able to travel to Silvia(a region located south of cali that isin the middle of a critical very period and has often been labeled as a red zone), to administer tests to 10 indigenous(Guambianos) that had been trained in health by local community leaders. All of them passed their tests and graduated!!

- We went to the march in response to the assasination of the 11 government leaders from the Valley that was to show support for the families, demanding the return of the cadavers and the release of others who have been kidnapped throughout the country.

Community Worker: Esneda Ortiz

I had a case with a girl that was less than a year old that was having problems breathing due to nasal congestion and a respiratory infection. Her mother told me that in two days she would bring her to the doctor but I insisted that she bring her that day as soon as possible. I couldn´t accompany her but I wrote her a reference and convinced her to go. For me it was very important because it turns out that the results of the physical exam showed that they prevented her death because when the doctor saw her he said that if they would have waited one more day she would have been dead.

IV: Prayer Requests

The arrival of the Miller in the United States and that God may support their ministry in Dover, Ohio and also their readaptation in the coming months.

Due the nature of our work, it is dificult to become self-sufficient. We pray that the spirit of God moves in people to sponsor Edupaz monthly or annually so that we can continue with our ministries.

For our new director Jorge, his family, his ministry, for safety and grace as he assumes this new role.

For the relationships that have formed between the YMCA, Edupaz and Americas Unidas School and may they continue prospering for the benefit of the institutions and the comunity that they are blessing.

We pray for the activities that we have planned so that they may be a tangible response to the necesities of the communities, the security of those who will be leading the workshops and the participants.

Introduction to Edupaz

Saludos!
We invite you to get to know us, who we are, what we do and how you can become involved. We hope that our blog will allow you to see a glimpse of the type of projects and ministries that we dedicate ourselves to here in Cali, Colombia.

What we do:

-Teach peacemaking, conflict transformation and mediation skills to community and church leaders and school teachers.

-Accompany our indigenous brothers and sisters (Guambiano / Nasa Paez) responding through training and workshops to needs they identify.

An example of one of these projects that has developed out of our relationship would be the Indigenous farmers´ market “ El Mercado Beraca”.

-Train Christian women and men in rural impoverished communities without access to medical care, to visit families providing health instruction, preventing disease and infant mortality.

-Offer counsel and care to victims of extreme trauma and stress

-Peaceful parenting and child abuse prevention, we teach dads and moms parenting fundamentals and skills—how to raise and discipline their children and youth nonviolently and responsibly as Jesus would.

-Coaching youth as risk, Instilling in them life skills and values

-Mediation training that gives Leaders the tools to intervene in interpersonal, organizational, church and community conflicts.

-Encouraging and enabling churches to develop ministries that respond to urgent needs of their members and neighborhoods.

-Teaching children and youth of the next generation peacemaking and conflict transformation skills breaking the cycles of violence and revenge.

Due to the nature of our work, it is very challenging to be financially self-sufficient. Pray that God´s spirit would move persons to sponsor Edupaz, monthly or annually, so that our ministries may continue.

TRANSITION:
That the peace office team will sense God´s presence and guidance as a new director comes on board that this experience strengthens the organization and encourages the team.

New Team Members:
That MCC can quickly find committed persons to come on board as Chet and Holly Miller- Eshleman return to the U.S.

Peace School “Escuela de Paz”:

That the groundwork can be put in place for a strong, practical training program in peacebuilding and conflict transformation to shape, equip and power leaders in the region.

Mediation and Reconciliation Center:

That the newly organized center can open its doors, and that the mediators can manage the cases well. Thus blessing the edupaz community.

Farmer´s Market:

As food prices soar, we see more and more families not even able to obtain basic foods. At the same time our indigenous partners need a market for their produce. Pray that we will be able to obtain the funds and find an adequate site to re-launch the indigenous farmers´ Market or “El Mercado Beraca”
